Henry VIII's kids.

Welcome back to WoMo’s blog, and we will be talking about Henry VIII’s kids. And yes, Henry VIII had several children! But only three of them were legitimate and had survived past their infancy stage.

Henry VIII’s children are named:

  • Mary I
  • Elizabeth I
  • Edward VI

At one stage, each of them had ruled England after Henry VIII’s death.

Let's talk more about Henry VIII's kids.

Fun fact: Did you know that Henry VIII had an illegitimate son named Henry Fitzroy?

King Henry VIII also had other children who had passed away in infancy or shortly after birth. Henry VIII’s children played an important role in English history and in the Tudor dynasty. Let’s talk about some of them, starting with Henry VIII’s eldest daughter, Mary I.

Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary” was the first queen of England, she reigned from 1553 until her death in 1558. Mary I was the daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon.

Mary I had become Queen shortly after the death of her younger brother, Edward VI. During Mary I’s reign she sought out to return England to the catholic church which led to religious persecutions of protestants.

Mary I was known to be courageous, stubborn, and well-educated. She was born on February 18th 1516, and died on November 17th, 1558.

Henry VIII’s second child was Elizabeth I. She was born on September 7th 1533 and died on March 24th, 1603.

She was the queen of England and Ireland from November 17th 1558 until she died in 1603. And Elizabeth I was the very last monarch in the house of Tudor.

Elizabeth I was the only surviving child from Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. After the death of her mother Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. However, Henry VIII restored her to the succession when she was 10 years old.

Also it is said that during Mary I’s reign Elizabeth I was imprisoned for almost a year because of suspicion of supporting protestant rebels.

Edward VI was born on October 12th 1537 and died on July 6th 1553.

Edward VI was king of England and Ireland from January 18th 1547 until his death in 1553. He was crowned king on February 20th 1547 at the age of nine. And he is the only surviving son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, as well as the first monarch that was raised as a protestant.

Edwards’s reign was marked with many economic problems and social unrest, meaning there was a lot of civil disobedience and strikes.

In 1553, when Edward VI was 15, he became sick. When it became evident that his sickness was terminal, Edward VI and his council drew up what was called “Devise for the succession.” Which was to prevent the country to return to Catholicism.

Who was Henry VIII's fourth kid?

Lastly I would like to talk about Henry VIII’s child: Henry Fitzroy.

Henry Fitzroy was Duke of Richmond and Somerset, and he was the only illegitimate son that Henry VIII acknowledged. He is the son of Henry VIII and his mistress: Elizabeth Blount, and it’s believed he was Henry VIII’s only child born out of wedlock.

Henry Fitzroy was the younger half brother of Mary I and the older half brother of Elizabeth I and Edward VI.
