Hello, and welcome back to our weekly blog where twice a week we will get to embark on a new adventure through history together.

In the last article, we talked about the talented artist Hans Eworth, who created amazing paintings such as Mary Neville, James Stewart, and Anne Askew.

In this article, we will be talking about a famous painter: Michelangelo, whose full name was Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni but he went by just Michelangelo.

A bit about the artist

Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, and architect. He was born in the Republic of Florence, and it is said that Michelangelo is one of the best-documented artists of the 16th century, and is one of the most accomplished artists of his era.

Michelangelo died in Rome on February 18th, 1564 and the age of 88.

It’s said that although Michelangelo is part of the three giants of Florence High Rennaissance, along with Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael, and the names are cited together. But because of Michelangelo’s reclusive behavior, he had little to do with either artist and outlived both of them by more than forty years.

Onto the art gallery

Now, it's no secret that Michelangelo is very famous for his works, let's talk about some of the best of them.

The first art piece we will be looking at is called the Sistine Chapel ceiling, this was painted in Fresco between 1508 and 1512. The ceiling was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II.

The ceiling’s various painted elements form part of a larger scheme of decoration within the chapel.

The second art we will look at is a sculpture called “Angel”

The statue is called The Statue of an Angel, and it was created using marble, It is 51.5 cm in height and is currently in the Basilica of San Domenico, Bologna.

The third art we will look at today is called “Brutus”And it was sculpted between 1539-1540 It is currently in the Bargello museum in Florence.

As a supporter of the Florentine Republic, Michelangelo sculpted Brutus a few years after the defeat of the Republic of Florence.

The final portrait we are going to look at is a portrait of Anne Askew, and this portrait was painted in 1560.
