Welcome back to our weekly blog, where twice a wek we will get to embark on a new adveture through history. And today we will be talking about Queen Charlotte.

Who was Queen Charlotte?

Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz also known as Sophia Charlotte was born on May 19th 1744, and she was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818.

As George's wife, she was also Electress of Hanover until becoming Queen of Hanover on 12 October 1814.

What was she like while growing up?

According to diplomatic reports at the time of her engagement to George III in 1761, it was said that Charlotte had "a very mediocre education".

Her upbringing was said to be similar to that of a daughter of an English country gentleman. She received some rudimentary instruction in botany, natural history, and language from tutors, but her education focused on household management and religion.

Queen Charlottes marriage to King George III.

The 17-year-old Charlotte had appealed as a prospective consort because she had been brought up in an insignificant north German duchy and, therefore, would probably have had no experience or interest in power politics or party intrigues and George III instructed her shortly after their wedding "not to meddle", a precept she was glad to follow.

When the King announced to his Council in July 1761, according to the usual form, his intention to get married to the Princess, after which a party of escorts, led by the Earl Harcourt, departed for Germany to bring Princess Charlotte to England.

How was she has the Queen Consort?

Upon her wedding day, Charlotte did speak little English. But she quickly learned the language, albeit speaking with a strong German accent.

St James's Palace functioned as the official residence of the royal couple, but the King had recently purchased a nearby property, Buckingham House, located at the western end of St James's Park. Which was more private and compact.

And around 1762, the King and Queen moved to this residence, which was originally intended as a private retreat. Which queen Charlotte came to favour this residence, and spent so much of her time there that it came to be known as The Queen's House.

What was Queen Charlottes taste?

Queen Charlotte and King George III were music connoisseurs with German tastes, and gave special honour to German artists and composers. They were passionate admirers of the music of George Frideric Handel.

Queen Charlotte was said to be an amateur botanist who had a great interest in Kew Gardens. When such travellers and explorers as Captain James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks were constantly bringing home new species and varieties of plants, she ensured that the collections were greatly enriched and expanded.

Queen Charlotte has also been credited with introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and its colonies. Queen Charlotte decorated a single yew branch, which is a common Christmas tradition in her native Mecklenburg-Strelitz, to celebrate Christmas with members of the royal family and the royal household.
